DICE CONTROL, HOW DO I DO IT?
Dice Control is not just about the skill of setting, gripping and throwing the dice, it is a total process including zoning in, aiming, releasing and following through.
Here Is How I Do It:
Become comfortable with the table. As the dice are coming to me, I'm rubbing the felt on the table and preparing my mind set. I am relaxing and breathing slowly and deeply. I have already determined my bet size and betting tactic and chips are positioned in my chip rack. Having my bets and chips ready allows me to totally focus on the gripping and throwing process. Sometimes I will work with a partner and I will place only Pass Line bets in order to focus on throwing. My partner will place more complicated bets and we share the winnings.
The Dice Set, quick and smooth, 2 seconds max. Dealers don't have time to even notice most of the time. As the dice are being pushed to me I study them and before they reach me I know how to adjust them to achieve the proper dice set.
The Dice Grip. I grip the dice using the three-finger front with all fingers even with each other. By now I have begun entering the "ZONE" my "Calm Place”. I see myself standing next to a beautiful waterfall. I block out everything and every person at the table. I've become ONE synergistic element with the dice, all working together toward one mutual outcome. I am often told by others at the table of things I did when I got the dice and things the pit crew said to me and I have no recollection of the events. I am totally focused on the dice and the desired result.
Aim. My arm is stretched toward the target area, taking in a deep full breath and filling my lungs I focus on the target. I never, ever allow my eyes to rise above the green diamonds at the end of the table. No eye contact with other players or the table crew, never, ever allowing myself to be distracted from my "calm place!"
Dice Square And Flush. During my aim, I adjust my wrist to ensure the dice are perfectly parallel to the back wall and flush with one another.
Holding In a deep breath, I bring my hand back, a short back swing, breaking wrist just slightly if at all, the dice remain parallel to end wall of the table, perpendicular to the tables sides and tight together.
I Begin a Full Exhale as my hand and arm flow smoothly forward to the desired release point with hand ending straight out, arm parallel to table bed.
- Eyes remain Fixed On The Target Landing Area
- All Thoughts Are Now Subconscious
- Muscle Memory Has Now Taken Over
The Release, the thumb releases a nanosecond before the dice slide off the front fingers. The split second difference between the dice pulling away from the thumb and front fingers insures 1 to 3 revolutions of the dice, the desired arc and a very soft landing. The backward rotation of the dice neutralize the forward momentum so when the dice land, the forward energy is reduced - just the right amount of spin to counter the forward momentum.
Follow Through, continue with arm, hand and wrist breaking upward, the hand in a “fish mouth” release, all the way through. A relaxed smooth release, no jerking motion at release (follow through like a golf swing or releasing a bowling ball). I do not have to throw the dice hard as they only have to travel six feet from my stick right position. My eyes are now on the dice watching them float on a nice slow arc with slight backspin holding tight together as they land in the target zone, visualizing the dice landing in the desired spot and with the desired outcome.
Nice Soft Landing. The dice take two to three bounces, square and flush to the table surface just in front of the diamond wall, they gently repel off the back wall and then die as if landing on fly-paper. They appear to stick to the table.
With the desired number resulting, I gently hit the table with my fist and, with a low whisper, say "Y E S!" This provides positive reinforcement, keeps me in my calm place and conditions my muscle memory, influencing the next roll. I duplicate the same process for each throw.
I concentrate on only ONE toss at time. The only toss that matters is the current toss, nothing else. Each following toss stands alone, on it's own, one thing at a time. Just one thing at a time.
Now, slowly breathing while assessing the dice as the stick man brings them back to me. A quick and easy check tells me which die I have to adjust and I make those moves quickly and seamlessly. I remain in my waterfall “calm place." I'm totally comfortable, fully relaxed, my right brain has taken over, my thinking is now all subconscious, I don't hear most of the table talk, it's blocked out, only thinking of this next throw and with total confidence of the desired outcome the process begins again.
I am not making the dice perform, I am working with them, I do not force anything. I have done no more than merely allow the dice to deliver the desired results, influenced only by my muscle memory and my state of mind.
When all the elements are tuned in, all at once, all together, the dice deliver flawless results, over and over again. It's truly an amazing thing to see and a really awesome feeling to experience. When that eventual "7" brings the journey to an end, I feel myself coming out of a deep trance. I look around and world begins to filter in. The people the sounds, now I can focus again on the chip rack and I begin to organize my winnings.
20 To 30 Plus Roll Hands take their toll on one's energy level. It normally leaves me exhausted, needing a well-deserved break to re-energize myself by finding, seeking any kind of warm and friendly distraction that will relax me and prepare me for the next session. I often can re-charge while standing at the table and talking to friends and not playing for a few rounds. This way when there are crowded table conditions I can re-group and not lose my position at the table.
